Perimeter

The perimeter of a polygon is the sum of the lengths of its sides.

Example 1  Find the perimeter of the polygon below.

Polygon Perim

From the congruent side markings, 2 sides are 2 inches and 2 sides are 3.5 inches.

2 · 2 + 2 · 3.5 = 11

Therefore, the perimeter of this polygon is 11 inches.

Example 2   Find the perimeter of a regular heptagon whose side length is 6 cm.

A regular heptagon has 7 sides of equal measure.

7 · 6 = 42

So the perimeter is 42 cm.
